This unit is designed to enable learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the
music business by studying its development from the turn of the twentieth century to the
present day. Learners will research the business, economic, social and technical factors that
have contributed to key developments and trends in the national and international music
industry and also look at theories of how the industry may develop in the future. This unit is
suitable for learners who wish to develop a range of skills (research, analysis, evaluation and
presentation) and will give them the underpinning knowledge to apply these skills in other
areas. It would be of particular benefit to learners studying HN Music Business, HN Music or
HN Sound Production

This unit is designed to give learners an understanding of the operation of record companies
and the factors that led to specific structures being adopted. Through case studies, the unit
will examine the licensing, Artist and Repertoire (A&R) and product management process
within record companies. Learners will then be able to further develop their knowledge by
examining the process for distributing audio products released by record companies. This
unit is suitable for HN Music Business learners and those seeking a career in a record
company and also for music business managers and practitioners seeking a greater
understanding of this industry sector.
