Unit purpose
This unit is designed to introduce the learner to the framework of law as it applies within the music industry. The unit will examine the principles of protection of intellectual property, assignment of rights, collection societies and common types of contractual agreements within the music industry. It will enable the learner to create a basic deal memo detailing the main clauses of a music industry agreement. The unit is intended to give learners a solid foundation in music law and intellectual property relating to music. It would be of particular benefit to learners studying Music, Music Business or Sound Production.

This unit is intended to give learners knowledge of a broad range of musical genres and then to provide the opportunity to study a record label and an artist in depth. This will be achieved through the research of the musical development of the genres in addition to broad study of the key artists within each genre.
