The purpose of this Unit is to introduce Learners to the use of sound design in visual media applications. Learners will have the opportunity to investigate the role and application of sound design in a variety of visual media. Learners will also have the opportunity to acquire practical skills in collecting and using sound elements to produce a sound design to support a visual media sequence.

SUMMARY In this Unit candidates will be given the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the basic structure of the UK music industry. Candidates will learn about the function of the key organisations within the UK music industry and the relationship between these organisations. They will also be introduced to the range of employment opportunities available within the UK music industry, and will be given the opportunity to examine the impact of legislation on those who work within the UK music industry. This Unit is a mandatory Unit within the National Certificate in Music (SCQF level 6) and the National Certificate in Sound Production (SCQF level 6), but can also be taken as a free-standing Unit. This Unit is suitable for candidates who are interested in understanding how the UK music industry operates and the employment opportunities available within the music industry.

Unit purpose This unit is designed to develop the learners’ knowledge of law as it applies to the music industry and to develop skills in evaluating the impact of contemporary issues on copyright and contracts. The unit will examine issues relating to music copyright, trademark and the collection societies before evaluating the impact of a current issue on music copyright. Learners will then go on to examine a music industry agreement and evaluate the impact of the agreement on the parties to the deal. The unit is intended to give HN Music Business, HN Music and HN Sound Production learners the opportunity to explore issues that have shaped contemporary practice relating to copyright law and music business contracts. Outcomes On successful completion of the unit the learner will be able to: 1 Explain law relating to music copyright and trademark and evaluate benefits of collection societies. 2 Explain a contemporary issue and evaluate the impact on music industry copyright. 3 Explain and evaluate a contemporary music industry agreement.
