Course Overview

This Unit will develop skills in researching and presenting information in text and graphical form relating to computing and will help learners prepare for further study at SCQF level 6, by showing them how to identify, locate, organise and effectively use information to address a specific problem. Learners will develop their study and research skills by managing time; identifying appropriate sources of information; reviewing information, taking relevant notes; avoiding plagiarism, gaining permission if necessary, using appropriate research tools, and reflecting on completed work.

Unit purpose This unit is designed to develop the learners’ knowledge of law as it applies to the music industry and to develop skills in evaluating the impact of contemporary issues on copyright and contracts. The unit will examine issues relating to music copyright, trademark and the collection societies before evaluating the impact of a current issue on music copyright. Learners will then go on to examine a music industry agreement and evaluate the impact of the agreement on the parties to the deal. The unit is intended to give HN Music Business, HN Music and HN Sound Production learners the opportunity to explore issues that have shaped contemporary practice relating to copyright law and music business contracts. Outcomes On successful completion of the unit the learner will be able to: 1 Explain law relating to music copyright and trademark and evaluate benefits of collection societies. 2 Explain a contemporary issue and evaluate the impact on music industry copyright. 3 Explain and evaluate a contemporary music industry agreement.
