In this unit you will be given the opportunity to listen to and explore a wide range of music genres. You will learn to identify and describe the distinguishing features of a range of genres and will go on to examine a particular genre of interest in more detail, and research the contribution a selected group or individual has made to that genre.
Unit purpose This unit is designed to develop the learners’ knowledge of law as it applies to the music industry and to develop skills in evaluating the impact of contemporary issues on copyright and contracts. The unit will examine issues relating to music copyright, trademark and the collection societies before evaluating the impact of a current issue on music copyright. Learners will then go on to examine a music industry agreement and evaluate the impact of the agreement on the parties to the deal. The unit is intended to give HN Music Business, HN Music and HN Sound Production learners the opportunity to explore issues that have shaped contemporary practice relating to copyright law and music business contracts. Outcomes On successful completion of the unit the learner will be able to: 1 Explain law relating to music copyright and trademark and evaluate benefits of collection societies. 2 Explain a contemporary issue and evaluate the impact on music industry copyright. 3 Explain and evaluate a contemporary music industry agreement.
Graded unit purpose This graded unit is designed to provide evidence that the learner has achieved the following principal aims of the HND Music Business: an ability to develop breadth and depth of knowledge in the music business an ability to analyse and synthesise knowledge and skills acquired through study an ability to develop study, organisational and research skills an ability to integrate music business skills in practical or business application an ability to develop competencies in a range of specialised areas in line with preferred career aims an ability to develop proficiency and music business acumen relating to the practices of the music industry to enable progression to further study in music business or a related discipline an ability to develop personal skills and follow music industry protocol an ability to develop critical analysis; to reflect on own work and continually strive for best practice to enable the adoption of innovative practices and creativity in work and ability to respond quickly to the challenges posed by changes in the music industry
