Unit purpose
This unit is designed to introduce the learner to the framework of law as it applies within the
music industry. The unit will examine the principles of protection of intellectual property,
assignment of rights, collection societies and common types of contractual agreements
within the music industry. It will enable the learner to create a basic deal memo detailing the
main clauses of a music industry agreement. The unit is intended to give learners a solid
foundation in music law and intellectual property relating to music. It would be of particular
benefit to learners studying Music, Music Business or Sound Production.
Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit the learner will be able to:
1 Explain copyright relating to the music industry and the collection societies.
2 Explain the function and key clauses of typical music industry contracts.
3 Create a Deal Memo for a typical music industry agreement in response to a given brief.
